How London Businesses Can Reduce Water Use Through Practical Sustainability Projects
Tuesday, May 19, 2026

Water conservation is becoming an increasingly important part of sustainable business operations. From rising utility costs to climate resilience and stormwater management, organizations across London are finding new ways to reduce water consumption while improving operational efficiency.

Whether through green infrastructure projects, rainwater collection systems, or operational improvements, businesses of all sizes can play a role in protecting local water resources and reducing environmental impacts.

Green Economy London’s Water Conservation Guidebook highlights practical actions organizations can take to support long-term sustainability goals.

Why Water Conservation Matters for Businesses

Water efficiency initiatives can help businesses reduce costs, improve operational performance, and strengthen sustainability commitments. Whether through infrastructure upgrades, employee engagement, or stormwater management strategies, even small changes can lead to meaningful environmental and organizational benefits. Here are a few examples on how to conserve water within your operations:

  • Track water use: Businesses often underestimate water consumption until it becomes measurable.
  • Upgrade infrastructure: Low-flow fixtures, leak detection, and efficient cleaning systems can significantly reduce usage.
  • Use green stormwater infrastructure: Rain gardens, permeable surfaces, and native landscaping help manage runoff while supporting biodiversity.
  • Engage employees: Water conservation training and operational awareness can improve long-term results.

Local Action: GreenTech Painting’s Water Reduction Journey

GreenTech Painting is a London-based painting company committed to delivering high-quality results through environmentally responsible practices. GreenTech realized that water was an invisible cost until they made it measurable.

Their team introduced water tracking as a key operational metric to improve efficiency and accountability. They eliminated leaks to prevent waste, reduced the volume of water needed in their operations to maximize savings, and installed new technology such as low flow toilets and innovative brush and roller cleaning to reduce overall consumption of water. Finally, they installed a rain barrel to collect and use rain water.

By integrating sustainability into daily operations, GreenTech reduced their water consumption by 30.66% from 2021-2025.

This shows how small operational changes, when measured and scaled, can generate significant environmental impact.

Join the Conversation on Sustainable Water Management

Businesses and community members interested in sustainable water management are invited to join Green Economy London and the London Environmental Network for the next Sustainability Social: Explore Green Stormwater Infrastructure on June 2nd. Hosted at the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority’s Watershed Conservation Centre, the evening will feature guided tours of the grounds and Fanshawe Dam while attendees learn from industry experts about innovative green stormwater infrastructure designed to help protect homes, businesses, and local ecosystems.

Panel discussions will explore topics including green infrastructure and low impact development, blue and green roof design, and water conservation strategies, followed by networking opportunities and refreshments. As part of the new Sustainability Socials event series, the evening is designed to connect local businesses, organizations, and community members through practical learning, collaboration, and conversations that advance sustainability and climate resilience across the region.
