Smart Energy, Smart Business: A Guide to Workplace Efficiency
Wednesday, Aug 13, 2025

Did you know that small to medium size businesses are estimated to account for 52% of all greenhouse gas emissions produced by Canadian businesses? This represents 41% of Canada’s total emissions according to the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC).

With energy costs on the rise and sustainability becoming a core value for many organizations, improving energy efficiency in the workplace is more relevant than ever. Taking steps to reduce energy use not only saves money but also demonstrates leadership in our community’s transition to a greener economy.

Key Ways to Save Energy at Work

  1. Reduce Heat Loss

Heating is often the largest energy expense in workplaces, especially during colder months. Simple steps can make a big difference: identify and seal drafts around windows and doors, insulate hot water tanks and pipes, keep windows closed when heating is on, and clear obstructions from radiators or vents. Regular maintenance for boilers, furnaces, and HVAC systems also helps keep costs down and equipment running efficiently.

  1. Use Smart Heating and Cooling Controls

Adjust thermostats seasonally and for weekends or holidays. Set office heating to around 20°C and cooling to 24°C or higher. Programmable thermostats can help avoid unnecessary heating or cooling, and make sure air conditioning is off in unused spaces. The temperature in corridors, storerooms and areas of higher physical activity can be set lower than 20°C. It is important to mention that this temperature can vary depending on the type of work and the workplace.

  1. Upgrade Lighting

Switching to LED bulbs and fixtures throughout your facility is a quick win. Install motion sensors or timers in meeting rooms, hallways, and storage areas to prevent lights from being left on. Maximize natural light by keeping windows clear and using light-coloured paint to brighten spaces. Explore the Small Business Program from Save On Energy, where you can receive up to $3,000 in free lighting incentives or the Instant Discount Program where you receive upfront discounts from participating distributors.

As a part of Green Economy London’s Green Project Support, Junction Climbing replaced 65 outdated fluorescent light fixtures with energy-efficient LED lights. This project reduced waste from having to replace burnt out fluorescent bulbs, reduced energy costs, and made the space brighter and more welcoming.

Clayworx, a Green Economy London member, completed a lighting retrofit to replace 62 long tube fluorescent lights with energy-efficient LED lights. This led to a reduction in electricity costs and is just one of many sustainable initiatives at their facility.

  1. Manage Office Equipment

Encourage staff to power down computers and monitors at the end of the day. Laptops use up to 85% less energy than desktops, so consider making the switch where possible. Enable power-saving settings on all devices and upgrade to ENERGY STAR certified appliances and equipment.

  1. Maintain Production and Kitchen Equipment

Turn off equipment and machinery when not in use. Regularly check and maintain refrigeration units, ensuring seals are tight and vents are clear. Defrost freezers and avoid overfilling fridges to keep them running efficiently. If you’re thinking of adding a night curtain for your refrigerator, check the Small Business Program by Save On Energy, which also offers up to $2,500 for eligible non-lighting equipment such as this.

In 2023, Reimagine Co. replaced their display cooler with an energy efficient one! This project allows them to have more space to cool their delicious products, while reducing food wastage and saving on energy costs.

Implementing these measures, whether small behavioral changes or larger equipment upgrades, can significantly impact your energy consumption. Beyond the immediate cost savings, these efforts contribute to a more comfortable and productive work environment, while also enhancing your organization’s reputation as a responsible and forward thinking business.
